Abstract:

Climate action and biodiversity conservation rely on market-based instruments like carbon and biodiversity credits to track and incentivise their impacts. Carbon credits compensate the carbon dioxide emissions, while biodiversity credits support ecosystem restoration. However, issues like double-counting and limited interoperability prevent their effectiveness. Blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) enhance transparency, traceability and trust creation in credit management through smart contracts, tokens, DLT oracles and decentralised identifiers (DID). This article explores the role of blockchain and DLT in strengthening credit markets and proposes a technical architecture that is intended to feed ISO/TC307 standardisation efforts to improve trust and scalability in carbon and biodiversity credit management.
