Abstract:

A range of decentralised identifier and identity terms-such as claim, identification, identifier, identity management and self-sovereign identity-have been defined and classified across several blockchain, distributed ledger technology (DLT) and identification standards. A previous article benchmarked 36 such terms from 16 relevant standards and reference documents. Harmonising these definitions within and across standardisation bodies (e.g. ISO, CEN-CENELEC, ITU-T) is essential to ensure coherence. This article extends the scope to 25 documents, updating the benchmark to 111 terms and proposing a taxonomy of decentralised identifier and identity terms for blockchain, DLT and identification standards. The taxonomy is intended to be introduced and discussed in relevant working groups, particularly within ISO/TC 307 and CEN-CENELEC/JTC 19.
